Introducing Underneath the Underground
As we speed up to Christmas all I can see is the remains of our kitchen becoming less and less with the new one not being fitted until January 24. We live in a town house so living space is tricky at the moment, it’s a little like camping in your own home, but amazing what you can achieve with a kettle, toaster, Vitamix (makes and heats its own soup) hot sandwich press, single hot plate electric hob and an electric wok. Renovations are always a nightmare worse if you have children to consider but as it’s just the two of us, as long as we can sleep, wash and eat we’re good. The only thing stressing me is dust and at night I turn into the ‘Hoover Monster’ in a vein attempt to keep it all at bay.
All of this on top of Christmas and promoting our new children’s book in the series ‘Underneath The Underground’ written by me and my sister Wendy Turner this one is called ‘The Kings Coronation and The Kohinoor Diamond’ We wrote the original 7 stories in 1995 but having spent so much time together on the M40 traveling between London and Stoke on Trent due to the sad death of our Mother, closing up of our family home and bringing Dad, a sprightly 90 year old, down to live with us in the south we decided to relaunch them.
The stories centre around the lives of the mice who live in the labyrinth of mouse tunnels underneath the London Underground. Each of their communities relate to the stations. The fashion conscious live at Knightsbridge station horticulturists at Kew, arty crafty mice at Covent Garden, political mice at Westminster the list goes on.
We’ve loved writing about these mice again, it’s been like catching up with a group of old friends and realising there are so many more adventures to still have with them.
Our first story of the new series begins two weeks before the Coronation and the British Asian mice at Hounslow Underground Station are planning to throw a fabulous party to celebrate the royal occasion.
But disaster strikes when a huge glitter ball created out of glass found by Brian Blackfriars, a Mudlarking mouse who lives at Blackfriars station, spins around in their ballroom and fails to shine, they have very little time left, what are they going to do? Soon, a daring plan is made, to take the Kohinoor Diamond from the Royal Crown and add it to the glitter ball, making it sparkle. Now good mice never take things that don’t belong to them, but as this diamond was removed from its Indian homeland in 1849 when Queen Victoria was on the thrown and brought over here it wasn’t really stealing, it was just returning it back to the Indian community, where it truly belonged. The mice work hard to replace the diamond with a piece of glass… but will King Charles and Queen Camilla notice?
It goes without saying we have sent members of the royal family our book and maybe n Christmas Day it will be in their stockings.
